Swimmers earn national honors again

SOMERS, Wis.- Make it two-for-two for UIndy swimmers.  In their second meet of the season, two more Greyhound athletes were named the Counsilman Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer-of-the-Week Honors for Division II, announced by CollegeSwimming.com Tuesday.  Guy Kogel (Nahalal, Israel), who also won on Oct. 14, and Erica Smith (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Snider/Duquesne) were each bestowed honors.

Kogel had three wins in the double dual victory over Truman State (242-184) and losses to Wayne State (199-244) and Ashland (179-256).  The sophomore won the 50 freestyle (21.40), the 100 freestyle (46.94, NCAA "B" time), the 200 freestyle (1:42.16, NCAA "B" time) and the 100 butterfly (49.89, NCAA "A" time).  Kogel also assisted on the second place 200 medley relay (1:37.26) and the second place 400 medley relay (3:31.69).

Smith had two wins in the double dual meet losses to Wayne State (266-176), Truman State (252-158) and Ashland University (226-209).  The senior won the 100 butterfly (57.95, NCAA "B" time), the 200 butterfly (2:08.83, NCAA "B" time) and swam to a second place finish in 200 individual medley (2:11.63, NCAA "B" time).  Smith also swam on the third place 200 freestyle relay (1:38.35), the fourth place 200 medley relay (1:51.59), and the fourth place 400 medley relay (4:01.26).

The Greyhounds compete next at the IUPUI House of Champions Invite Nov. 13-14 at the IU Natatorium downtown.

EVANSTON, Ill.- In a release by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), the UIndy women’s swimming and diving team’s spring semester grade point average of 3.74 was the highest of any Division II team in the sport.  The squad garnered Team Scholar All-America accolades from CSCAA for their efforts, with four team members, as well as two from the men’s team, garnering individual academic honors.

BAY CITY, Mich.-  The University of Indianapolis swimming teams boasted 22 student-athletes on the All-Academic Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference teams released this week by league officials.  UIndy had 11 women and 11 men grab honors from the conference.

CANTON, Ohio-  Eight UIndy All-America performances, six from the Greyhound women, highlighted a solid four days of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio completed Saturday night.  The Indianapolis women finished ninth to extend a streak of 11 straight seasons placing in the top 20 nationally.  The Greyhound men took 21st.

CHICAGO-  The University of Indianapolis picked-up a pair of new NCAA A-cut times at the Midwest Invitational at the University of Chicago.  The meet was the final chance for swimmers to qualify for the national meet and two more Greyhounds punched their tickets with their performances this weekend.

DETROIT-  Host Wayne State was crowned the women's champion while Grand Valley State won the men's title at the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming and diving championships.  Both UIndy squads finished in fourth place.  Maura Donahue was named the GLIAC "Female Freshman of the Year".

INDIANAPOLIS- In their final meet before the conference championships, the UIndy men’s and women’s swim teams both earned dual victories versus Lewis at the Ruth Lilly Center Pool Saturday afternoon.  The men downed the visiting Flyers 114-87, while the women took a 122-82 win.

INDIANAPOLIS-  Grand Valley State swept a pair of duals in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference swimming action Saturday afternoon at Ruth Lilly Center Pool.  The Laker women earned a 142.5-91.5 win while the GV men were 162-78 winners.
