HOUSTON- The pair of nationally-qualifying Greyhound wrestlers bowed out of the NCAA Division II National Championships Friday, with both UIndy grapplers losing both of their matches on the day.
No. 4-ranked
Matt Irwin (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont), the Greyhounds' 141 wrestler, fell 6-2 in his opening match of the tournament to Jeremy Parker of Limestone. Irwin, in his second trip to Nationals, then dropped out of the competition with a 13-3 major decision loss to John Putman of Minnesota State-Mankato. The junior finished his 2008-09 season with a record of 32-8.
Cory Fornal (Rochester, Ind./Rochester Community), UIndy's 157, lost his first bout of the meet 6-0 to John Sundgren of St. Cloud State. He then got pinned in the first round of wrestlebacks at 2:06 by Keenan McCurdy of Nebraska-Kearney. Fornal, a redshirt sophomore, closed out his 2008-09 season with a record of 21-14.
Nebraska-Omaha is currently leading in the team standings, with Newberry in second and defending champion Nebraska-Kearney in third. The tournament runs through Saturday evening.
