Women's tennis splits at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind.-  The UIndy women's tennis team moved to 2-1 overall on the season with a split at DePauw University Saturday.  The Hounds bested cross-town IUPUI 5-4, before falling to NCAA Division III powerhouse DePauw, the No. 12 team in the nation, 9-0.

IUPUI took a 2-1 lead after taking the top two doubles matches.  The UIndy pair of Rachel Barger (Decatur, Ind./Adams Central) and Ceciley Starkey (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) scored an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, the Greyhounds won the last four singles positions to generate the winning points for a 5-4 victory.  Aly Neidlinger (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) won at No. 3, Lee Matthews (Dayton, Ohio/Beavercreek) won at No. 4, Kelsey Hartman (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) at No. 5 and Rachel Barger (Decatur, Ind./Adams Central) at No. 6 all in straight sets.

Despite the team score, the Greyhounds battled the 12th-ranked Tigers on their home venue.  Alena Perez-Majul (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Aly Neidlinger (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) lost a close 8-5 battle at top doubles.  Perez-Majul took the first set at top singles against Kelly Gebert, but fell 6-7, 6-4, 10-1.

Meghan Teunis (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic) was in a grueling match at No. 2 singles, winning the first set, 6-3.  After dropping the second set, 6-4, Kayla Smith needed a 10-8 win in the super tiebreaker to take the victory.  The Tigers won each of the bottom four singles spots to take the win.

UIndy (2-1) will finish-up the fall portion of its schedule this week, hosting the ITA Regional at Center Grove High School.  The Hounds will then break until a Feb. 27 match with Franklin College to open its championship season.
