Question: Who is your new wrestling coach, and what kind of problems is the delay going to have on recruiting for next year? -Dave O.
Answer: Selection of new head coaches is very difficult and obviously very important. Selecting a new coach not only involves recruiting of student-athletes for the immediate future but more importantly the overall welfare of the program for many years to come. I feel fortunate in the fact that we have an alum and long-time valued member of the UIndy wrestling program continuing to oversee the recruiting as he has done before. It is imperative that the selection process not be rushed. It is too important a decision not only for the wrestling program but for the UIndy athletics department and the university.
Question: Will UIndy offer men's and women's lacrosse in the very near future considering the exponential growth of lacrosse nationwide? -Alonso M.
Answer: Thank you for your question. We will not be adding any new sports in the near future if ever. We currently conduct 21 NCAA DII Intercollegiate Sports which involves 524 student-athletes. With the economy the way it is we are very fortunate that we are not being asked by the administration to cut sports. In the next couple years we will have to be as fiscally responsible as possible and most likely have to rely on more fund raised dollars to help cover rising travel costs.
Question: What is the timetable on UIndy having its own outdoor tennis facilities. Having a permanent indoor facility seems to be a luxury, especially when there are no outdoor courts. It seems that few schools could compete with the indoor facility as a winter, bad weather practice facility but most prefer on-campus outdoor courts for fall and spring matches.- Ivan S.
Answer: Ivan, thank you for your question. At the current time there are no immediate plans to build outdoor tennis courts. It would be our hope to eventually build courts on campus but there are several other building projects which are more pressing at this time since we have the indoor facility. Our plan is to use various high school courts when needed for practice and/or competition outside. Thanks again for your question.
Question: I attended the softball games on Apr. 20 and I heard the field is going to be destroyed to be replaced by a much needed dorm. What I did not hear is what the plan is to replace the field. I did hear(from a parent) 2 years and (from a student) 5 years. What's the timetable? -Larry S.
Answer: Thank you for your question and I hope I can clear up some of the misinformation you may have received. At the conclusion of this SB season there will indeed be a new residence hall built on that site. As a historical perspective, the site of New Hall (the dorm closest to the field currently) use to be where the softball field was located. Here is the time-frame which we are working under. The 2008-2009 season for practice and play will occur off campus, hopefully at the Indiana Central Little League softball field (which we've used in the past for tournaments) as well as Roncalli's softball field when available. We are currently working on these agreements. Summer of 2009, a new Softball Field will be built, site TBD. Each time we move the field we end up with an improved venue. Two level press box would be included. The growth and improvement of our softball program will not be adversely affected by the continued expansion and development of our facilities. I was the softball coach for 20 years. I'll make sure softball is taken care of with a new venue for the 2009 season. I hope this helps, even though the final decision on location is still to be determined. Stay Tuned!
Question: Excellent response to the GLIAC/GLVC Football question. As a Findlay Oilers football fan currently living in Maryland, I am excited about the possible upcoming changes in D2 Football. As you know, Ohio Dominican is heading toward D2 membership and I think more Ohio schools will follow. This being said, I think that if the GLVC can't do football Indy would be a great addition to a potential Ohio D2 private school conference and the travel would be a lot less than the Greyhounds have now. Huh, I guess no question, just putting the proverbial bug in your ear. -Tim K.
Answer: Thanks Tim for the information. I am aware of Ohio Dominican. Bottom line is we will keep all options open. Any decision will be based on what is best for our program. Thanks again for your comments!
Question: Do you give full ride scholarships for football? -Larry I.
Answer: Thanks for your question. In all sports including football it is the head coach who determines who receives a scholarship as well as the amount of each scholarship. Coaches may award full rides, however it depends on the number of scholarships a program has and the number of athletes needed to successfully run that program. At UIndy, typically the sports that award the greatest number of full rides are men's and women's basketball. Those programs have 10 scholarships and usually maintain rosters of 12-14 players. Most Division II sports award partial scholarships. Occasionally a coach will award a "Blue Chip/Division I talented" athlete in a sport other than basketball a full-ride, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
Question: Do you provide athletic scholarships for men's tennis? If so, how many do you provide? Any talk of eliminating men's tennis to make room for football, or any other reason? -Mark R.
Answer: Thank you for your question concerning men's tennis. The UIndy men's tennis program does offer athletic scholarships and currently offers 2.5 scholarships. There is absolutely no talk of eliminating men's tennis or any other program at this university. There are many schools around the country who are dropping men's tennis as well as other men's sports, such as wrestling, and they are blaming their decisions on Title IX. What is actually happening however, is the money those schools recoup from eliminating various men's sports is being directed back into the men's football or basketball programs. Title IX keeps getting a bad rap for these types of decisions when in reality it should fall on the shoulders of the decision makers.
Question: If the GLVC starts football, would UIndy leave the GLIAC to join that conference for all sports? -Tony M.
Answer: Thanks for this excellent question. I'm sure many folks around the GLIAC are asking the same thing. The GLVC is indeed talking about adding football as a conference sport. If and when that might occur is still uncertain. Currently there are not enough GLVC members who sponsor football to even make this possible. If in the future the GLVC offers not only football but also swimming and diving as conference sports, then we would seriously consider the move. Just as an FYI - The GLIAC currently voted to move to divisions in football for 2008. Indianapolis has been placed in the NORTH Division even though we are the institution located the farthest south of all GLIAC schools. This is largely due to the fact that Lake Superior State does not offer football, so UIndy is taking its place in the divisional structure. I was opposed to divisional play in football. In my opinion it was done for all the wrong reasons and will be a more expensive venture for UIndy due to our placement in the North Division, while others may see reduced travel costs. Consequently, we would consider leaving the GLIAC... if the situation is right for the university.
Question: Why doesn't the volleyball team get to play in the main gym? -Rick M.
Answer: When the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center was built in 1983 it was intended to be the dedicated practice and competition venue for both volleyball and wrestling. With the recent completion of our University Strategic Plan and Campus Master Plan there are many new facilities on the horizon for athletics. It is our plan to move volleyball and wrestling into Nicoson and make that facility our Competition Venue. There are many additional facility needs in Nicoson in order to make this happen which of course will require substantial fundraising. We are currently working on prioritizing the various athletic projects in the works but we are confident that within the next 3-5 years UIndy athletic venues will be greatly improved.
Question: Does the football team and/or basketball team allow students without an athletic scholarship tryout to have the opportunity to walk on? -Wendell R.
Answer: Absolutely! All of our teams have some type of open tryouts for walk-ons.
